Activities Week
We wish staff and students well for Activities Week. All year levels are engaged in alternative programs during this week. The facilitation of this week enables us to minimise disruption to classroom learning.
I thank the facilitators of each week for their thorough preparation.
- Year 7 Camps: Mrs Jacqueline Salamon and Mrs Melanie Paino
- Year 8 Camps: Mr Dave Ferrante
- Year 9 Camps: Ms Fotini Veis and Mr Sal Valentino
- Year 10 Careers: Mrs Lisa Bosco
- Year 11 Christian Service: Mr Jamie McIlroy
- Year 12 Retreats: Mr Adam Calderone
I also thank the teachers and members of support staff who so generously give of their time to attend camp.
We wish all participants a safe and enjoyable week.
As students are being dropped off and picked up from camp, I ask parents to be mindful of where they park and drive. We want to ensure the safety of all students. Parents are encouraged to park off campus and walk to collect students. The parent drop off zone can become very congested during Activites Week and people in cars may have to wait longer than usual. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Indigenous Perspectives
The review of the Child Safety Standards in 2022 saw the introduction of a new standard in Victoria.
Child Safe Standard One Organisations establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children and young people are respected and valued.
To address this standard, the College has established a Culturally Safe Steering Committee. A number of exciting initiatives have extended from this group. The committee has been supported by Shelly Ware, Loyola parent and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Shelly is working alongside the new committee to upskill staff in Aboriginal History and Culture.
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2674/picture1.jpg)
Three of our students worked with Shelly to design a print that can now be found on the back of our student and staff ID cards. Thanks to Lee Rocca, Taj Fazekas and Ella Robinson for working together to produce such a beautiful design.
In addition, our Head Gardener, who is of aboriginal heritage, is designing a yarning circle, surrounded by a garden. We are hoping to use this with students to build an understanding of culture and history.
Thank you to those parents who have committed to the working bee on Friday 3 March. Parents will be working alongside Dave Kelly to further develop this new space at the College.
Lenten reflection day for Clergy
On Wednesday 8 March the College will be hosting the annual Lenten reflection day for clergy. The Archbishop and a number of diocesan priests will be present on the day. This is a great honour for the College. Most students will be off campus due to Acitvites Week, which allows our guests to have a quiet and reflective space.

Opening School Mass
On Tuesday 14 February, the College community came together to celebrate the Eucharist for the opening of the new school year. Fr. Anthony Girolami and Fr. Gerry Healy SJ celebrated the Mass and we thank them for their presence at this important event. Masses form an integral part of who we are as a Catholic College and it was wonderful to see our students so reverent and engaged.

Pancake Tuesday fundraiser
On Shrove Tuesday the Young Vinnies club sold pancakes for our annual fundraiser. This year, the funds raised will be donated to Caritas for the Turkiye and Syria Earthquake Appeal. Pancakes sold out within minutes at lunchtime and there were many smiling faces with lots of yummy pancakes devoured! Thank you to everyone who got involved for your efforts in bringing some much needed funds to one of the biggest natural disasters to hit this century.

Ash Wednesday Paraliturgy
On Ash Wednesday, students participated in a paraliturgy with their Mentors to mark the start of the Lenten season. We would like to thank the student leaders who led the paraliturgies and assisted with the distribution of ashes. Across the world on Ash Wednesday, Catholics with ash marks on their foreheads are a common sight. Ash Wednesday also marks the beginning of the countdown towards Easter, and our community will be observing Lent leading up to Easter Sunday. We encourage all members of our College community to participate in the practice of almsgiving (assisting those in need), prayer and fasting.

Caritas Project Compassion
Ash Wednesday also marked the start of our Caritas Project Compassion fundraiser for Term 1. Students are encouraged to bring a $2 coin donation to their Mentor and buy from the variety of fundraising sales throughout this term.
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2690/thumbnail_image007.png)
Just a $2 coin donation from each member of our College community will enable us to raise more than $3000 for the vital work that Caritas does in Australia and around the world. Together we can make a difference – thank you for your donations.

Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN
Please note that NAPLAN will now take place week beginning 13 March.
Dates:
- Wednesday 15 March – Writing
- Thursday 16 March – Reading
- Friday 17 March – Language Conventions
- Tuesday 21 March – Numeracy
- Wednesday 22 March – Catch Up
Students will be completing the NAPLAN tests online. This will require them to make sure that their digital device is fully charged for each session, and that they have their non-wireless headphones with them each day.
Student Report:
As a result of the changes, parents and carers will receive earlier, simpler and clearer information about their child’s NAPLAN achievement. Reports will be easier to read and will provide clearer information about how a student is progressing.
The numerical NPLAN bands and the national minimum standard will be replaced by four levels of achievement. These will give teachers and parents better information about what a student can do.
Levels of Achievement:
- Exceeding
- Strong
- Developing
- Needs Additional Support
For more information please refer to the NAPLAN website

ACS Season
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2667/frisina_massimo.jpg)
Hello all,
These past few weeks have been eventful to say the least, with the 2023 ACS season commencing, the newly named House Sports taking the place of LCS, and we can’t forget about the swimming carnival, and there’s still heaps more to get excited about his year.
The ACS season has started with a bang! The majority of the intermediate teams came home with the win, including Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Hockey, Basketball and more. Our senior teams also got a few wins under their belt for the 2023 season, hitting the season with a high with a few narrow wins along the way, such as Basketball winning by one point 50-49 and the cricket 1st team narrowly pulling away with a 130-129 win against St Leonards. In saying this, not all wins were as close as they seem, with the Girls senior soccer team winning a comfortable 6-0 against their opposition. This is only the tip of the iceberg and once the teams get comfortable playing with each other the sky’s the limit.
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2668/car_hayley.jpg)
House sports has also started to heat up with the new implementations of a few exciting sports such as ultimate frisbee, end zone and buroinjin for the juniors, which all are seeming to be great hits. The competition of house sports seems to be increasing year by year and getting more intense as we progress throughout the year. In saying this, it’s also a great time to meet new people, make new friends, put yourself out of your comfort zone, and, of course win points for your house. I couldn’t think of anything better!
On Friday the 10th of February we had our House Swimming Carnival. It was a day enjoyed by many and gave everyone a chance to represent their house and earn points. The day started off with a novelty event which involved students racing with inflatable animals, then a mixed medley relay. Individual events then began in both the 50 metre and 25 metre pools and in between them students got the opportunity to swim for their houses in a continuous relay and year twelves got to compete against one another in water polo. The day concluded with the freestyle relays and the teacher vs students relay, where students proved to be too quick for the teachers and secured the win. The last event of the day was the Jackson Car Memorial Gift, an event for the three fastest male and female swimmers in the 50 metre freestyle. The participants were Rohan Wein, Jacob Ryder, Jeremy Coleman, Hayley Car, Ruby Street and Brydie Hutchinson. It was a very successful day for all and it was amazing to see how many people got involved and tried their best.
The next upcoming sporting event is the ACS Swimming Carnival which will be on the 14th of March. Those who were lucky enough to finish top 3 in their race in the House Swimming Carnival now get the opportunity to compete at the ACS swimming carnival.

Rohan Wein
Rohan Wein won every individual swimming event at the House swimming in which he participated. These events were: the 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Congratulations to Hayley Car and Rohan Wein who have been appointed Swimming Captains.
The Loyola swim team have been training hard for the past few weeks and are looking extremely strong and ready to race! We wish them the best of luck and hopefully all results reflect each member's hard work and dedication. Later in the term those Senior ACS teams who are successful will compete in finals and that will conclude sport for Term One. For the rest of the year, we get to look forward to the House Athletics Carnival which will take place on the second week of term 2, the commencement of the ACS winter season, ACS Athletics Carnival and Cross Country.

Sport Captains
Faith & Art: Reflection
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2650/lay_alanah.jpg)
In Year 12 Faith and Art class, we started off with exploring different religious cultures and various famous religious arts, which we then shared amongst the class with each other to expand our knowledge of different traditions. We then proceeded to work on artworks ourselves, beginning by doing research to find a religious art that stood out to us and that we were able to recreate. We had the choice to either trace or freehand the drawing onto a small canvas before going ahead and painting it with acrylic paint. We have spent several classes working on our artworks and we are still in the process of doing so.

Wellbeing

SPECIAL REPORT: The Wellbeing Barometer 2023
Because parenting doesn’t come with instructions, SchoolTV is a wellbeing resource implemented at our school to help support parents in the challenge of modern-day parenting. Parenting is a learning journey and it’s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed when faced with raising happy, well and resilient young people today.
Every family has experienced some sort of difficulty or adversity in recent times, some more than others. As mental health concerns continue to rise, there have been some alarming statistics reported in relation to the mental health and wellbeing of young people. Unfortunately, the blueprint for parenting is often based on our own experiences, but this is no longer fit for purpose in raising children as citizens of tomorrow. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in providing the guidance needed to support children and adolescents as they reframe their worries and focus more on the things they can control in their life.
In this Special Report, we are seeking parent participation through a short survey. The survey is designed to provide a barometer to help gauge the state of student wellbeing within our community. We encourage you to take a few moments to complete the survey as this will help our school know the nature and extent of your concerns and determine how best we can support families in the months ahead. Responses remain anonymous and will only be reported on an aggregated basis. You are asked to base your responses on observations made in the last 12 months.
![](https://loyolacollege.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2631/thumbnail_wellbeing_barometer_with_text.jpg)
By working together we can continue to build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding and break down barriers as we navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for all students. Please reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you or your child, please reach out to the school or seek professional medical advice.

Cybersafety Part 2: What is posted on the Internet remains there forever!
Once posted, it’s toasted!
Consider this true story. A teenage girl takes some photos of herself modelling and posts these photos up on her social media account for her friends to see. Some months later she is travelling in a bus and notices an advertising billboard with one of her modelling photos on it. Shocked and curious, her concerned parents contact the advertisers only to discover that a social networking site had sold her photos to them without their daughter’s prior knowledge or consent. But when the teenager rings up the social networking organisation, she is politely informed that when she signed up for an account and agreed to their Terms and Conditions, she was in fact agreeing to hand over to them the copyright and ownership of all future content she posts – text, photos, videos, everything! She will never get a single cent out of the social networking organisation, and she will never be able to stop the organisation using her photos or videos as it sees fit.
What about when applying for a job? Does having a social media account or signing up for online competitions matter? Absolutely! The Internet is like ‘Big Brother’, constantly gathering data about a person’s private life. It is now commonplace for employers to use Google and social networking sites to do background checks on job applicants before deciding whether to interview them for a job. There are also organisations that are paid to ‘dig up’ as much online information about job candidates as possible, in order to build an accurate profile about them and therefore help make an informed decision about whether to invite them for an interview and hire them. This is known as ‘Data Mining’.
On the Internet you may be surprised at the amount of personal information available about people – this information is not protected by privacy laws, since it has been willingly posted on the Internet each time a person adds their profile details to a social networking site, or signs up for free downloads, ringtones, or competitions, or posts an Instagram picture, blog or tweet.
Parents/guardians, please encourage your child to think twice about posting the following online: boasting, being crude or talking about socially negative behaviours like theft, drug use, homophobia, xenophobia or getting drunk. These character blights will form part of your child’s online curriculum vitae.
It gets scarier. Even when deactivated, a Facebook account is kept forever; officially, this is so no one else can use the same name. But once a person’s information is put out there on the Internet, it can never be taken back! It is kept on a database and can be accessed by people with sufficient authority, even if that information does not appear to be visible to the public.
What can parents/guardians do to protect themselves and their children from cyber-theft?
1. Ensure they remove any content that someone else may find valuable or which may be used to hurt or bully them in future;
2. What about closing the Facebook account? Closing down the account alone is not sufficient. Delete all photos before closing it down; nevertheless, all content will still be kept in archives, and can still be indexed by Google. And if someone else has already downloaded those photos, they can still repost or do what they like with the photos without asking for permission or telling anyone about it;
3. When signing up for things like social networking sites, add only the minimum information. Never fill in fields that are not asterisked. Never provide a surname, or at least a real surname. Never supply a date of birth, or at least a real date of birth. Never give out a personal, work or school email address. At the very most, use a temporary email address that can easily be dumped later on. Keep your personal email address only for important correspondences, such as for family, close friends and work.
4. Never use the school email address for anything other than for school related activities.
Stay safe online. Be careful not to get burnt!
